" Storm in Vegas!! the cover of Yahoo.Com said, All flights delayed due to a rainstorm. Standing in the departures lounge in my black Italian wool tuxedo at sunny LAX I was sweating from a mix of fear dread and over dressing ( well what would you wear to sing with a legend? ) . I was En route to record with the jazz master and all round coolest cat in the room "Little" Jimmy Scott. The singers singer. I had finally tracked Jimmy down to his home in Vegas we were scheduled to record the duet he had promised me about twenty years ago in New York. We had crossed paths a few times since then and we always spoke of recording something but it never quite happened. Always one thing or another. I was at the end of my tenure as a background singer on Glee and living in Los Angeles and after over a decade a background singer I was a bit lost to be honest, no idea what to do next or even if I wanted to continue singing at all. The business can really fuck with you that way. Insecurity had really gotten into my head. Jimmy had retired and not sang publicly in over two years. His career had spanned over six decades and he was honored more than any Living Jazz singer could be including having superstars kiss your feet at every show. Madonna, Quincy, Bill Clinton, Bowie, Lou Reed, David Lynch, Elton John, Sting, Jagger all drooled over his authenticity and brilliance. So why exactly was about to record with me?
His health was declining and he was weak but his wife and caretaker Jeanie said if I could travel to Vegas with a portable studio Jimmy was keen to give it a shot!. and now the flight was delayed! What happened next would change my life forever and set me on a path I could have never imagined " -SG
